Let Us Be Prepared For Earthquakes!

Japan is a nation of earthquakes. Some of you might have experienced an earthquake with an intensity of 4 to 5 recently which occurred in quite a few places in Japan.
Earthquakes are different from typhoons in such a way that it is impossible to predict when it will come. Are you prepared for an earthquake that can directly hit Tokyo area, which experts say can happen within 30 years, with the possibility of 70 percent?
After the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, we, the St. Ignatius Church, hold evacuation drills every year during Sunday Masses to prepare for disastrous earthquakes. By doing so, we will be better prepared as to how to think and act, and limit panic situations to the minimum. Also, we expect there will be cases when we are unable to go home due to the disastrous situations and have to stay at the church. In such cases, let us all be helpful to one another other regardless of nationalities.
EVACUATION DIRECTIONS
When an EARTHQUAKE strikes
The Lector during the Mass will repeat the following announcements (a whistle can be used if necessary):
- “Everyone, please, squat down.
- Children please quickly get under the seats.
- Those who are standing, please move away from the stained glasses and squat down.
- Please cover your heads. Use anything: brief case, purse, or a hymnal.
- Cover your heads!”
When the evacuation begins he announces:
- “The evacuation has begun.
- Stand where you are until the ushers come.
- We will start evacuating from the rear back.
- Take your baggage, follow instructions of the ushers.
- Please, everyone, follow the instructions of the ushers.
- If you are sick or cannot move freely, or if you are injured, stay where you are and raise your hands. An usher will come to you.
- If you are seated in the silver seat, using a wheel-chair and need special care you will be evacuated last. Please wait, you can be sure that you will be led outside”.
